To maintain the health and longevity of an electric bike battery, it is generally recommended to charge it after every ride. However, the frequency of charging an e-bike battery rely on many factors, such as the type of battery, the level of usage, and the type of ride. Should I charge my ebike everyday or should I charge my electric bike after each ride? These are the most searched topics by the cyclists communities.

Here are some main points to keep in mind when deciding when to charge your e-bike battery:

Battery Type

The type of e-bike battery you have will decide how often you need to charge it. Lithium batteries, which are commonly used in e-bikes, have a longer lifespan if charged frequently and are not allowed to discharge fully. This means that it’s better to charge the lithium battery after each ride, or at least every few rides, to maintain its health.

Usage Level

The level of usage will also determine how often you need to charge your e-bike battery. If you ride your electric bike frequently and cover long distances, you may need to charge the battery after each ride. However, if you only use your e-bike occasionally or for short trips, you may be able to charge it less frequently.

Type of Ride

The type of ride you take can also impact how often you need to charge your e-bike battery. If you are riding your electric bike on hilly terrain or using the highest power mode, you may need to charge the battery more frequently. However, if you are riding on flat terrain and using a lower power mode, you may be able to ride for longer before needing to recharge.

Safe charging basics

When it comes to charging an electric bike battery, there are some safe charging basics to keep in mind to ensure the battery is charged correctly and safely.

Here are some tips to follow:

1. Use the Right Charger

Use the charger that comes with the electric bicycle or a manufacturer-recommended charger. Using a different charger can cause damage to the battery, which may result in safety hazards or reduce the battery’s lifespan. So use the charger supplied by the manufacturer to charge electric bike battery regularly.

 2. Avoid Extreme Temperatures

Do not charge the electric bicycle battery in extreme temperatures, such as direct sunlight, below-freezing temperatures, or high humidity areas. Extreme temperatures can affect the battery’s lifespan, performance, and safety.

3. Charge in a Safe Location

Charge the ebike batteries in a dry, well-ventilated area, away from flammable objects. Never leave the battery unattended while charging, and do not charge it near water or damp areas.

4. Check Battery Voltage

Before charging the battery, check its voltage to ensure it is within the acceptable range. If the battery voltage is too low or too high, it can cause harm to the battery.

5. Charge the Battery Regularly

Charge the battery regularly, even if you do not use the e-bike often. Regular charging helps to maintain the battery’s health and extend its lifespan.

6. Do Not Overcharge

Overcharging the battery can cause it to overheat, resulting in safety hazards or reducing the battery’s lifespan. When the battery is completely charged, unplug the charger immediately.

Should I Charge my ebike every day?

The answer to whether electric bikes should be charged daily depends on the individual circumstances, as there are benefits and disadvantages to both approaches. One advantage of charging an e-bike battery every day is that it ensures a full battery when needed, especially for commuting purposes. It is also important to understand the battery management system.

Charging an e-bike battery every day may decrease its lifespan. Lithium batteries have a limited number of charge cycles, meaning that each time the battery is charged, its capacity decreases gradually. Charging the battery daily uses up more charge cycles, requiring the battery to be replaced sooner.

It is crucial to consider the depth of discharge when charging an e-bike battery. Lithium-ion batteries operate optimally within a particular range of DOD. Regularly discharging the battery to 100% before recharging may exert unnecessary strain on the battery, potentially reducing its lifespan.

Conversely, discharging the battery to only 20% before recharging may not use the battery’s capacity to its fullest.

The recommended approach is to aim for a DOD of around 20-80% and avoid fully discharging the battery if possible. This will help extend the lifespan of the battery and ensure optimal performance.

Regarding charging frequency, charging an e-bike battery every day is generally acceptable as long as the DOD is monitored, and the battery is not overcharged. Most e-bike batteries come with a built-in management system to prevent overcharging, but it is advisable to remove the charger once the battery is fully charged.

How Frequently Should I Charge My Ebike Battery?

To ensure that an e-bike battery remains in good condition for a longer time, it is recommended to charge it after every ride. The charging frequency depends on factors such as distance travelled, battery capacity, and level of assistance used. If the e-bike is used for shorter trips, it may be necessary to charge the battery more frequently, while longer rides may require less frequent charging.

Charging the battery regularly is essential, irrespective of the distance travelled, to maintain its health and prolong its lifespan.

It is advisable not to let the battery’s charge level drop below 20-30% to avoid reducing its lifespan.

How Long Should I Charge My E-Bike Battery (Each Time)

The time needed to charge an e-bike battery depends on factors such as the charger’s output, battery capacity, and level of depletion. Typically, most e-bike batteries take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours to charge fully. However, it is advisable to consult the manufacturer’s guidelines for the recommended charging time for your particular e-bike battery.

Overcharging the battery can negatively impact its lifespan, so it is important to disconnect the charger once the battery is fully charged.

How to optimize battery range and lifespan

Optimizing the range and lifespan of an e-bike battery can be achieved by charging it after each ride, avoiding complete discharges, and charging it in a cool and dry place away from flammable materials.

Furthermore, reducing the level of pedal assistance during rides can help extend the battery’s range.

Can I Overcharge My E-Bike Battery?

Yes, it is possible to overcharge an e-bike battery, which can lead to reduced battery life and even cause safety hazards. Overcharging occurs when the battery is left connected to the charger for an extended period after it has reached its full charge. Therefore, it is essential to disconnect the charger once the battery is fully charged. Don’t leave the battery plugged in unnecessarily. This is a mistake that new electric bike owners usually make.

Most modern e-bike chargers have a built-in mechanism that stops the charging process once the battery is full, preventing overcharging. However, it is still essential to be cautious and avoid leaving the battery connected to the charger for more than the recommended charging time.

It is also important to charge the battery in a well-ventilated, cool, and dry place, away from flammable materials, to prevent any safety hazards. Charge your electric bike with care and enjoy riding.

Looking for a pedal assist ebike, but confused about which one to buy? Worry not; we are here to assist you with the ultimate guide to buying an e bike. In this blog, we will take you through all the information you need to buy the perfect pedal assist bike for you.

Understanding the Three Classes of Electric Bikes

There are three classes of e-bikes, each with different characteristics and restrictions.

Class 1

Class 1 e-bikes provide assistance only when the rider pedals, and assistance stops when the bike reaches 20 mph (32 km/h). This type of e-bike is suitable for bike paths, roads, and any other areas where traditional bicycles are allowed. QUANTUM eBikes sells only Class 1 bikes.

Class 2

Class 2 e-bikes come with a throttle that provides a boost without the need for pedaling, and assistance also stops at 20 mph (32 km/h). These e-bikes are permitted in the same areas as Class 1 e-bikes.

Class 3

Class 3 e-bikes provide assistance only until the bike reaches 28 mph (45 km/h), making them a popular choice for commuters. Like Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes, they are allowed on bike paths, roads, and other areas where traditional bicycles are permitted. However, they may be subject to more restrictions than other classes of e-bikes. For example, Class 3 electric bikes are prohibited in Canada.

Class 1 and Class 3 e-bikes are the most popular among riders because they still require pedaling, which allows for a more natural cycling experience.

Disclaimer: These classifications and rules may vary from country to country and state to state. Kindly check with your local authorities before buying an electric bike.

Selecting the right electric bike according to the frame

High frame

A high frame e-bike has the battery mounted on the frame’s downtube or seat tube or integrated inside the frame. These e-bikes are comfortable for both young men and women.

They are also suitable for riders of all ages and of varying physical fitness levels. However some people may find it more challenging to mount and dismount due to the higher top tube.

Low frame

A low frame e-bike has a large V-frame. The battery is mounted on the rear rack or integrated into the frame of the bike. Many people like the low step-through, which is easy to step over. Low frame e-bikes provide stability and safety.

Mid frame

A mid frame e-bike is between a high-step bike and a low step bike. The battery is usually integrated into the frame. Mid-step frame bikes appeal to everyone, men and women.

Some general points to keep in mind while buying an e-bike

Determine your needs

Before purchasing an e-bike, consider your intended use, such as commuting, recreational riding, or off-road biking. This will help you narrow down the options and choose an e-bike that meets your specific needs.

Decide on the type of e-bike

There are several types of e-bikes available, including road bikes, mountain bikes, folding bikes, and cargo bikes. Choose the type of e-bike that fits your needs and preferences.

Check the motor and battery

Check local regulations

E-bike regulations can vary by location. Make sure you understand the rules and regulations in your area before purchasing an e-bike.

Consider the cost

E-bikes can cost up to several thousand dollars. Consider your budget and choose an e-bike that provides the features and performance you need at a price you can afford.

Note: The table above shows the price using the average cost of electricity, the cost varies depending on the time of the day where in high demand period it increases and on low demand decreases.

Which e-bike charger to choose?

Charging the battery with a 2A or a 4A charger will not affect the cost since the total amount of electricity induced in the battery will be the same at the end, and also they use the same 110v electric socket so there are no other fees for using a larger voltage source of electricity.

Bosch ebike Charger

How long it will take to charge a battery?

The time to charge a battery will depend on its size, voltage and the charger capacity.

In Theory, for a 400 Wh battery, 36 V, with a 2A charger, the charging time will be:

Time = (Battery size in Wh) / ((battery voltage in V) x (Charger capacity in A)

         = (400 Wh ) / (36V x 2A) = 5.55 h

Time = 5 hours and 30 min.

Same battery with a 4A charger, time will be:

Time = (Battery size in Wh) / ((battery voltage in V) x (Charger capacity in A)

         = (400 Wh ) / (36V x 4A) = 2.77 h

Time = 2 hours and 45 min.

Note: The battery will take longer to charge than the theoretical values above because when the charge reaches 80%, the charging procedure slows down in order to balance the charge of each cell inside the battery.

Conclusion

When charging your eBike battery, it’s important to consider not only the cost of electricity but also the charger amperage. Using a higher amperage charger will decrease the charging time the battery. However, always consult the manual or the specifications of your eBike and charger before using a higher amperage charger, as doing so with an incompatible equipment can cause damage to the battery or the charger.

Overall, with eBike batteries becoming more efficient and with the cost of electricity in Quebec and Ontario being relatively low, the cost of charging an eBike battery should not be a major concern for most people, especially if you are using a high-amp charger.

Bike parking in Amsterdam

A Glance at the Amsterdam Parking Model.

The city of Montreal has reported an increase in the number of cyclists on its roads, indicating a growing need for improved cycling infrastructure. The rise in bike usage has been attributed to higher gas prices and a culture that supports sustainable transportation. The number of bike trips increased by 20% in Montreal in 2021, with a total of 12 million trips. It is an upward trend that does not seem to slow. But the growing number of bikes and ebikes bike theft incidents has also increased.

According to Vélo Québec, an estimated 15,000 to 25,000 bikes are stolen each year in Montreal alone. However, only around 2,000 of these thefts are reported, indicating that a significant number of people do not report their stolen bikes. E-bikes are comparatively more expensive than traditional bicycles, becoming a lucrative item for thieves. Bike theft has become a concern for people, who using bikes, eco-friendly, cost-effective, and healthier mode of transportation.

Bike theft is a common crime not only in Montreal but all the big cities around the world. Some cities are actively finding ways to reduce bike theft. One such city is Amsterdam – the bike capital of the world – which can provide a blueprint to secure bikes.

The number one reason for bike theft in urban areas is the lack of secured bike parking spaces. Amsterdam has recognized it and is spending extensively on secure bike parking.

Amsterdam secure bike parking – Unique in the world

A Dutch studio has finished building an underwater bicycle park adjacent to Amsterdam’s central station. With its glossy white interiors situated nine meters below the surface of the city’s renowned canals, the facility provides parking for roughly 7,000 bicycles (there is room for 6,300 privately owned bicycles and an additional 700 bikes for bike shares within the facility) and is linked directly to the metro and railway system via six escalators. This ground-breaking project is believed to be the world’s first of its kind. Capacity is expected to expand to 11,000 bicycles when a second garage is opened. This is a secured parking space that would benefit 200,000 commuters that arrive each day at Amsterdam’s Central Station via various modes of transportation, including rail, ferry, tram, bus, and subway. Roughly half of these arrivals are on bicycles.

Amsterdam Bikes parking

The entrance to the underwater bike garage is easy to find, marked by a large blue sign featuring a bicycle logo. It is visible from a distance and can be accessed via a street-level bike path that leads directly to the garage’s above-ground entrance. The sign displays the number of available parking spaces, with illuminated green numbers indicating the count. Upon arrival, if the garage is full, the displayed number allows for finding alternate parking. From the entrance, you can disembark from your bicycle and walk or use the rolling beltways that lead down below the waterline and bring you to the parking garage’s entrance. Vertical columns inside the garage are equipped with red and green lights, making it effortless to identify the rows of bicycle racks with available spaces.

Facilities like these can reduce bike thefts and encourage people to ride bicycles and ebikes more.

Montreal and other cities of the world can follow Amsterdam’s blueprint and create secure bike parking spaces along with biking lanes and paths.

However, such infrastructure developments can take years to develop, so what can you do to protect your prized bikes from theft?

8 tips to protect your bike from theft

1. Invest in a good bike lock

A good quality lock is essential to prevent your bike from being stolen. There are many different types of locks available on the market, but it’s important to choose one that is strong and sturdy. U-locks and heavy-duty chains are two of the best options as they are hard to cut with bolt cutters or saws. Always make sure to lock your bike to a strong fixed object, such as a bike rack or pole, and secure both the frame and wheels.

2. Choose a safe location to park

When you park your bike, always choose a location that is visible and well-lit. Avoid parking in secluded areas, alleys, or places with little pedestrian traffic, as they can be an easy target for thieves. Look for bike racks located in busy areas where there are lots of people around.

3. Lock your bike properly

It’s not enough to just use a lock. You need to lock your bike properly. Make sure your lock goes through both the frame and the wheels and is secured to a fixed object. Avoid locking your bike to something that can be easily removed, such as a tree or bench.

4. Register your bike

Keep a record of the bike’s serial number, make, and model, and take a photo of your bike for identification purposes. Registering your bike with your local police department can help increase the chances of getting it back if it’s stolen.

5. Use a GPS tracking device

GPS tracking devices can be attached to your bike and connected to your smartphone, allowing you to track your bike’s location in real time. Some GPS trackers also have an alarm system that will notify you if your bike is moved without your permission. Available soon at QUANTUM eBikes.

6. Avoid leaving accessories on your bike

Lights, bags, and other accessories can be easily removed from your bike. Always take them with you when you park your bike to reduce the risk of theft.

7. Keep your bike indoors

If possible, keep your bike inside your home or workplace. This greatly decreases the risk of theft as your bike is not visible to potential thieves.

8. Be vigilant

It’s crucial to stay vigilant of your environment and remain alert to any doubtful behavior. In case you come across someone attempting to steal a bike, promptly notify the authorities.

Conclusion

By following these precautions, you can substantially decrease the risk of your bike being stolen. Therefore, ensure to implement the essential safety measures to safeguard your bike.

Plan your route

Charge battery

First and foremost, it’s important to plan your route carefully while taking into account the range of your e-bike. With an e-bike, you will be able to cover much more distance comfortably than on a traditional bicycle, but you will still need to plan your route and make sure that you will have access to charging stations along the way. A typical range for an e-bike is around 80km – 100km, but this can vary depending on the type of e-bike, terrain, and the weight of your luggage. When it comes to e-bike touring, your days may look like “town to town” rides, and less backroad touring. This is simply to be able to charge the batteries, but you could circumvent this by bringing two batteries with you… just be wary of the additional weight!

Type of terrain

When planning your route, it’s also important to consider the type of terrain you will be riding on.

Some e-bikes can handle steep inclines and rough terrain much better than traditional bicycles, but it’s still important to be aware of the challenges that you may encounter along the way. The tires that came stock on your bike might not be suitable for all terrain – if you’re planning on encountering some gravel, consider upgrading your tires to something like the Schwalbe GT365. These tires are the perfect mix of grippy, but fast rolling.

Packing and Gear

Bike Road Electric Bike with Ortlieb waterproof bags

Another important aspect of e-bike touring logistics is packing and gear. When you’re loaded

with gear, it’s important to make sure that your e-bike is equipped with a rear rack, panniers or a trailer to carry your gear. Also, make sure to pack light, you don’t need to bring everything with you, prioritize the most important items and try to find ways to make them multi-functional. Consider a set of Ortlieb backs to ensure your gear stays dry! Here is a shortlist of “must have” items when considering an eBike tour:

• A reliable e-bike that’s been recently tuned!

• A comfortable and well-fitting helmet.

• A comfortable saddle that you’re prepared to spend most of the day in!

• A clothing and gear for potential weather conditions, including rain gear and warm layers.

• A quality and spacious pannier to carry your gear and supplies, like Ortlieb.

• A tool kit and spare parts for your e-bike, such as an extra inner tube, a pump, and tire levers.

• A reliable and waterproof tent and sleeping gear.

• A camping stove and fuel for cooking.

• Adequate food and water for the duration of the trip. Consider bringing water purification tablets if you find yourself without water, but near a natural spring!

• A first aid kit and any necessary medications.

• A headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries.

This list is not exhaustive and your needs will change to the specific trip you are going on.

Accommodation

When it comes to accommodation, you can either camp, book a hotel or use a mix of both. It’s important to be aware that some hotels may not have facilities for charging your e-bike, so it’s important to plan ahead and find accommodation that will meet your needs.

Laws and Regulations

Finally, it’s important to be aware of the laws and regulations surrounding e-bikes in the areas that you will be traveling through. Each country and region has different laws and regulations, so it’s important to research them before you start your tour. If you’re touring from Montreal to Burlington, do your research on laws in the United States regarding cycling on the roads & electric bikes!

Conclusion

E-bike touring can be a great way to explore the outdoors and cover longer distances, but it’s important to plan your route, be aware of the terrain and laws, and pack and gear accordingly. With careful planning, you can ensure that your e-bike tour is a success.

Key components – Electric bikes

Compact electric bike with child Riese Muller Multitinker

One of the key components of these car-free neighborhoods is the use of electric bikes or e-bikes. E-bikes have been hailed as a key component in creating sustainable and efficient car-free neighborhoods.

Alternative to cars

Firstly, e-bikes are an excellent alternative to traditional cars. E-bikes are powered by a rechargeable battery, which provides a boost of power to the rider, making it easier to navigate hills, headwinds, and other challenges. They are also much more compact than cars, making them easier to park and store and take up less space on the road. With e-bikes, residents can travel around their neighborhoods quickly and easily without having to rely on cars.

Environmentally friendly mode of transportation

Secondly, e-bikes are an environmentally friendly mode of transportation. They emit zero greenhouse gases and reduce noise pollution. In car-free neighborhoods, e-bikes can play a key role in reducing the number of cars on the city road, which in turn, reduces traffic congestion and improves air quality. Residents of car-free neighborhoods can enjoy cleaner air and a healthier environment by relying on e-bikes for transportation.

Active and healthy lifestyle

Thirdly, e-bikes are a great way to promote an active and healthy lifestyle. Without the shallow convenience of cars, residents are more likely to walk or bike, which can lead to increased physical activity and improved health. E-bikes can be a great alternative for longer distances and can be ridden by people of all ages and fitness levels. They also provide a low-impact form of exercise, which can be beneficial for individuals with joint pain or other mobility issues.

Money saving

In addition to these benefits, e-bikes can also help to save money. Cars are expensive to purchase, maintain, and insure, and by relying on alternative forms of transportation, individuals can save money on these costs. By spending the money within the local economy instead of spending it on the upkeep of your vehicle, you provide a huge economic benefit to local businesses.

Sense of community

Lastly, e-bikes can promote a sense of community. Without cars, streets are more conducive to socializing and community gatherings, as there is less noise and pollution. Restaurants and bars can extend their outdoor patios onto the street to increase capacity. This can help to create a stronger sense of community and foster a more connected and engaged population.

Owning an e-bike is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and explore your city with ease. However, it’s important to take care of your e-bike to ensure it lasts and operates at its best. How to maintain your ebike is one of the most searched topics among electric bike enthusiasts. If you are a frequent rider then it’s even more important for you to take care of your bike be it a cargo bike, hybrid bike, or city bike.

An ebike is different from a regular bike, so e bike maintenance requires extra care. Here are some tips on what owners need to know for electric bike maintenance.

How often should one service an electric bike?

The frequency of servicing an electric bike depends on several factors, including the intensity of use, the terrain it is ridden on, and the climate. In general, it is recommended to have an e-bike serviced once a year or after approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) of use, whichever comes first.

However, if you ride your e-bike more frequently, especially in harsh conditions, you may need to have it serviced more often. You can also maintain a routine maintenance schedule for your electric bicycle at a professional service center/bike shop for basic maintenance needs.

How to determine your E-bike needs service?

Strange noises

Unusual noises can be a sign that something is wrong with your e-bike. Grinding, clicking, or squeaking sounds could indicate that your chain needs lubrication, your brakes need adjustment, or there is an issue with the motor or other components.

Difficulty in pedaling

If you notice that it’s getting harder to pedal or the electric bike is slower than usual, it may be a sign that the battery is running low other is a trouble with the motor or drivetrain.

Reduced battery life

If you notice that your e-bike’s battery life is shorter than usual, it could be a sign that the battery needs replacing or that there is an issue with the charging system. For good battery care, it’s recommended that you go to a professional service provider.

Shaking or vibrations

Shaking or vibrations when riding can be an indication of loose components, such as the wheels or handlebars. Visit your nearest e bike shop to get the part replaced.

Braking issues

If your brakes are not working correctly, it can be a safety issue. Worn brake pads can cause bad bike control. Signs of braking issues include reduced stopping power, a spongy feeling when squeezing the brake lever, or noise when braking.

How to keep tires properly inflated?

Electric Folding Bike Quantum Broadway Red

Keeping your e-bike tires properly inflated is crucial for optimal performance, safety, and comfort. To know how much pressure the electric bike needs, check the recommended tire pressure, invest in a good quality tire pump, and use a tire gauge to measure the tire pressure accurately. Check the tire pressure regularly, at least one time every week, and inflate the tire slowly and steadily until you reach the recommended pressure. Be sure to inspect the tire for damage while inflating it.

By following these points, you can ensure that your e-bike tires are properly inflated, which can improve your e-bike’s performance, safety, and comfort and prevent any potential damage to the tire or rim.

How to clean an e-bike?

Gepida ebike Black

Clean is a regular maintenance need. To clean electric bikes, you’ll need a bucket, mild detergent or bike cleaner, a soft brush, a sponge, a hose, and a clean cloth. Remove the battery before rinsing off any loose dirt and grime from the bike. Mix a mild detergent or bike cleaner with water in a bucket and use a soft brush or sponge to clean the frame thoroughly, paying particular attention to areas with dirt or grime build-up.

  2. Second, use the right level of pedal assist and avoid using the highest level all the time.
  3. Third, make sure your tires are properly inflated, as low pressure can cause more resistance and decrease your range.
  4. Fourth, avoid extreme temperatures, as high temperatures can drain the battery and low temperatures can decrease the battery’s capacity.

Finally, consider investing in a higher capacity battery or an extra battery to carry with you on long rides.

Battery charging and storage

Battery charging and storage are crucial to the performance and longevity of e-bikes. It’s essential to use the charger provided by the manufacturer and avoid overcharging the battery. Charging the battery after every ride ensures it’s always ready for your next ride. Keeping the battery in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight is also crucial in extending its lifespan. Before storage, check the battery charge level, and recharge it if necessary to avoid over-discharging. It’s also recommended to charge the battery at least once every few months, even if it’s not in use. If face a problem charging your battery visit a service center.

The Green Swamp Wilderness Preserve is traversed by this trail, which will take you through a variety of environments along the way, including a river swamp, bottomland forest, pine Flatwoods, and cattle ranches.

Choose a bike with a low center gravity

To reduce the risk of the cargo e-bike tipping over, choose a bike with a low center of gravity. This will help improve stability, especially when carrying heavy loads like your dog. Consider getting a cargo e-bike with a wider wheelbase and sturdy frame for added stability.

Check the cargo weight limit

Make sure you don’t exceed the cargo e-bike’s maximum weight capacity, which can affect stability and safety. Check the manufacturer’s guidelines and ensure that the weight of your dog and carrier are within the recommended limits.

Keep your dog on a leash

To prevent your dog from jumping off or getting loose during the ride, use a leash to keep them securely attached to the cargo e-bike. Make sure the leash is long enough to allow your dog to move comfortably but short enough to prevent them from jumping off the bike.

Start with short rides

Introduce your dog to the cargo e-bike slowly and start with short rides to help them get used to it. Gradually increase the time and distance of the rides as your dog becomes more comfortable with the bike. If your dog or pet shows signs of discomfort or stress, take a break or end the ride and try again later.

Avoid busy roads and extreme weather conditions

Choose quiet routes with minimal traffic to avoid exposing your dog to the stress and noise of busy roads. Avoid riding in extreme weather conditions like high winds or heavy rain, which can be uncomfortable and dangerous for your dog. Consider waiting for the weather to improve before taking your dog for a ride.

Protect your dog from the elements

Provide your dog with adequate protection from the sun, wind, rain, and cold weather, depending on the climate and conditions. Consider using a sunshade, rain cover, or windbreaker to protect your dog from the elements. Ensure that your dog is appropriately dressed for the weather conditions, especially during cold weather.

Use a secure and comfortable pet carrier

If necessary, when transporting your dog on a cargo e-bike, it is important to ensure that the carrier is securely attached to the cargo deck. Make sure that the carrier has adequate ventilation and padding to ensure your dog’s comfort during the ride. The carrier should be spacious enough for your dog to move around and lie down comfortably. Consider getting a carrier with a locking mechanism to prevent your dog from accidentally escaping during the ride.

Always put your dog’s safety and comfort first while riding, and if you have any worries, think about seeking advice from a vet or a qualified dog trainer.

Enjoy the adventures with your furry friend!

Front section of Electric Bicycle Gazelle and displaying a light

Electric bikes are a great way to get around town and are becoming increasingly popular. However, if you want your e-bike to last as long as possible, it is important to maintain it properly. This blog post will discuss how to maintain your electric bike in good condition so you can enjoy it for years to come!

Regularly check your tires

Ensure your tires are not worn or punctured, as this can be a major safety hazard when riding. Worn tires happen naturally over time, and it is recommend that you change your tires every year if you ride daily, or on harsh road conditions. If your tire tread is damaged, you will find you have reduced grip and less resilience to punctures.

Also, check the pressure in your tires regularly; over-inflated or under-inflated tire pressures will affect how your e-bike rides and may cause premature wear. Make sure you know the range of pressure your specific e-bike has. For example, Riese & Muller bikes have high volume tires, and will require lower PSI and a traditional road bike by about half! If you’re used to putting 80PSI into your road bike tires and attempt that with your Riese and Muller, you may burst the tire and damage the product, or even hurt yourself!

Ebike Maintain Battery

Charge your battery at least once a month

Make sure you are charging your battery regularly to ensure it is always ready to go when needed. Batteries naturally discharge themselves over time, so if you haven’t checked the battery for many weeks after charging, you may be surprised that it’s much lower than expected. Many electric bike batteries have built-in indicators that will tell you how much charge remains in the battery, and it’s important to keep an eye on this, so you can stay supplied when riding.

Urban Electric Bike Gazelle Medeo T9 City

Clean and lubricate your chain

It’s important to keep the drivetrain clean and well-lubricated for optimal performance. If you have a traditional chain drive system, use a degreaser to clean off any excess grease or dirt, then apply bike lube or oil as needed. Do not over apply lubricant as it will act as a glue for dirt and debris. The critical part of lubricating your chain is ensuring it penetrates the hinges of the chain, not coat the outside. This will help prevent rusting and ensure that your chain runs smoothly.

O2feel eBikes Carbone gates

If your bike has a belt drive, like most of the Riese & Muller, O2feel and Gazelle electric bikes, then your drive train requires no lubricant at all. However, it may be necessary to clean your drivetrain with soap and water if it becomes excessively dirty, and debris is causing the belt to run not smoothly on the cogs.

Store properly when not in use

When you’re done riding your ebike for the day, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or moisture. UV from the sun will damage the paint, and batteries do not appreciate being exposed to high temperatures like direct sun. If you plan on storing it outside during winter, cover it with a waterproof tarp or use a bike storage shed to keep it safe from the elements.

Clean regularly

Regularly wiping down and cleaning your e-bike is essential to ensure it continues optimally, and also becoming familiar with its components. During a routine wipe down, you will be able to take note if components get loose or have shifted around. Make note of these changes and contact your service centre if you have any concerns. Use a damp cloth or an air compressor to blow away dust, dirt, and debris, making sure to take care of all the small parts, like the suspension components, chainrings, and hubs. Take extra care not to get cleaning product on your brake rotors, as they can become contaminated and loose efficiency.

Electric bike maintain – Get regular maintenance checkups

E-bikes require more maintenance than regular bikes due to their extra electrical components. Have a professional do a thorough checkup every six months to ensure everything is in working order. This will help you spot any potential issues before they become major problems and keep your e-bike running smoothly for years to come!

Conclusion

By following the tips outlined above, you can ensure that your e-bike remains in good condition for a long time. Kinekt Tige de selle à suspension

A Comparison of Spring and Polymer Suspensions

When it comes to upgrading your bike, one of the first things to consider is your seat post. A suspension seat post can help to absorb bumps and vibrations, making your ride smoother and more comfortable. Two popular options on the market are the Kinekt Suspension Post and the Cane Creek Thudbuster. Both offer a level of suspension, but they use different technologies to achieve it.

In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the Kinekt Suspension Post and the Cane Creek Thudbuster and compare their features to help you make an informed decision.

Suspension Seatpost Kinekt

KINEKT Suspension Post

The Kinekt Suspension Post is a spring-based suspension seat post that uses a unique parallelogram design to provide up to 30mm of travel. The parallelogram design allows the saddle to move independently of the bike frame, which helps to absorb bumps and vibrations to your spine. The Kinekt Suspension Post also features a preload adjustment that allows you to fine-tune the suspension to your weight and riding style.

Spring suspension, as the name suggests, uses a spring to absorb vibrations and impacts. The spring is typically located between the seatpost and the frame of the bike. As the bike goes over bumps or rough terrain, the spring compresses and expands to absorb the shock, providing a smoother ride. The spring is usually made of steel, titanium, or composite materials such as carbon. In the case of the Kinekt, it uses steel, which is well known for its flexible quality.

Spring suspension can be adjusted to suit the rider’s weight and riding style by adjusting the preload on the spring. The preload refers to the amount of tension placed on the spring before it is installed in the seatpost. This allows the rider to fine-tune the suspension to their specific needs, and can be adjusted on the fly.

Spring suspension is considered to have a progressive spring rate, meaning that the resistance to compression increases as the suspension is compressed. This means that the suspension is stiffer at the beginning of the travel and softer at the end of the travel.

Overall, spring suspension is considered to be a more customizable option compared to polymer suspension, but it requires more maintenance and is more prone to wear and tear.

Suspension seatpost Cane Creek Thudbuster

CANE CREEK THUDBUSTER Suspension Post

The Cane Creek Thudbuster is a polymer-based suspension seat post that uses a parallelogram design to provide up to 50mm of travel. The parallelogram design allows the saddle to move independently of the bike frame, which helps to absorb bumps and vibrations. The Thudbuster uses an elastomer (polymer) instead of a spring which offers a more linear suspension travel.

In a nutshell, polymer suspension (also known as elastomer suspension) works by using a flexible polymer material to absorb vibrations and impacts. The polymer material is typically in the form of a small rubber-like cylinder or puck and it’s placed between the seatpost and the frame of the bike. As the bike goes over bumps or rough terrain, the polymer material compresses and expands to absorb the shock, providing a smoother ride.

The polymer material is typically made of a high-performance rubber-like compound that is designed to be durable, resistant to wear and tear, and able to withstand a wide range of temperatures.

The polymer suspension is considered to have a linear travel, meaning that the suspension travel is consistent throughout the travel. Unlike spring suspension, the polymer suspension does not have a progressive spring rate, which means that the resistance to compression does not change as the suspension is compressed.

Overall polymer suspension is considered to be a simpler, more reliable and maintenance-free option compared to spring suspension, but it also offers less adjustability.

Summary

Both the Kinekt Suspension Post and the Cane Creek Thudbuster are designed to absorb bumps and vibrations, but they use different technologies to achieve it. The Kinekt Suspension Post uses a spring-based suspension, which can be adjusted to your weight and riding style. The Cane Creek Thudbuster uses a polymer-based suspension, which offers a more linear travel.

When choosing between the Kinekt Suspension Post and the Cane Creek Thudbuster, it ultimately comes down to personal preference. If you’re looking for a suspension seat post that can be fine-tuned to your weight and riding style, the Kinekt Suspension Post may be the best option. If you’re looking for a suspension seat post with a more linear travel, the Cane Creek Thudbuster may be the better choice.

Conclusion

In conclusion, both the Kinekt Suspension Post and the Cane Creek Thudbuster Suspension Post are excellent options for upgrading your bike’s seat post. They both offer a level of suspension, but they use different technologies to achieve it. The Kinekt Suspension Post uses a spring-based suspension, which can be adjusted to your weight and riding style, while the Cane Creek Thudbuster uses a polymer-based suspension, which offers a more linear travel. Ultimately, the choice comes down to personal preference, so it’s worth testing them both out before making your decision.

Les infrastructures cyclables, luxe ou nécessité?

French version here.

Cycling Infrastructure: The Case of  The Netherlands

The Netherlands is renowned for having high bicycle use. The Dutch government spends an astonishing €510 million (€30 per capita) per year (1) on developing bike infrastructure. Looking at the staggering data, one might ask, why so much investment in bicycle infrastructure? And why are 17 million Dutch people obsessed with cycling as a means of transportation (2)?

To the outside world, it might look absurd, but to the Dutch people, it’s a way of living a happy and healthy life. The health benefits are immense. In a study, it was found that cycling alone prevents 6,500 deaths (3) in the nation and increases life expectancy as well. But it is not just about health. The economic side of it also indicates it to be a beneficial trade. The health benefits amount to more than 3% (3) of the overall gross domestic product of the Netherlands. As a result, investing more in bike infrastructure provides a high cost-benefit ratio for the country’s 17 million plus citizens.

Canada’s Investment In Cycling

In Canada, too, people understand the benefits of cycling, and the cycling community is growing day by day. In 2020, in Montreal alone, 1.1 million people rode bicycles, while Quebec had 4.5 million bicycle users. However, the spending on cycling infrastructure is not enough to meet the needs of the growing community (4). Between 2006 and 2017, nearly 890 people died (5) while riding bicycles. The reasons vary, but the lack of a safe and secure bicycle infrastructure is a major contributor to the tragedy.

The Netherlands has continuous, wide, and well-maintained cycling paths, making it easier for the rider to navigate across the city and country. The paths are generally 4 meters wide, providing ample risk-free space to ride. The good cycling infrastructure translates into more and more people adopting it as a regular means of transport. In 2019, an estimated 22.9 million bicycles were in the Netherlands, of which 2.4 were electric ebikes (6). Every year, approximately one million bicycles are sold. If we look at the total population, which is 17 million, then it is evident how much the Dutch people love cycling, owning 1.3 bicycles per capita, which happens to be more than any country in the world (7). The wide cycling community wants cycling to be taken seriously in the country, so safe, secure, and smooth routes can be set up for people to ride bicycles.

Bike Lanes In Canada Are In Growing Demand

In Canada, the growing demand for good paths for cycling routes has been increasing. Last year, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Catherine McKenna and Parliamentary Secretary Andy Fillmore announced a funding commitment of $400 million over five years to help build and spread networks of paths, bike lanes, trails, and walker bridges (8).On average, $80 million dollars will be spent each year, which, in comparison, falls short. With a large population and urban areas, Canada requires more infrastructure spending. In the long run, investing more in cycling infrastructure makes perfect sense as the world moves toward more sustainable modes of transportation. Here are the main benefits…

Health: With accessible cycling routes, more people will adopt cycling, resulting in better health and a reduced problem of obesity. Approximately 26.8 percent of Canadians were classified as obese, with another 36 percent classified as overweight (9). Exposing them to health risks due to excess weight. Cycling can also reduce mental stress and depression. In short, it can improve the overall health of an individual.

Economic: An active lifestyle leads to less spending on healthcare needs, allowing individuals and governments to save vast sums of money in the long run. Bicycling requires less parking space, so there is no need to maintain huge and costly parking facilities.

Less fatal accidents: When compared with motor vehicle accidents, bicycle accidents are less likely to cause severe injury, adding to the average life expectancy of the country.

Environmental: Motor transport vehicles cause air pollution, leading to global warming. Gradually, if more and more people adopt cycling as a mode of travel, then the growing air pollution problem can be controlled. The transportation sector currently accounts for 27% of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada (10). More bicycles also mean less noise pollution.

Affordable transportation: Travelling on your ebike or bicycle is less expensive than driving a car or a motorcycle. While cars demand frequent repairs, ebikes/bicycles can be easily maintained and stored.

Better community building: Cycling is more than just a means of travelling; it is a fun activity which allows people to connect and share their experiences with each other. As a hobby, it is something on which people can connect and develop better community values.

Less congestion on the road: Cycling is an effective tool for reducing the increasing load of traffic. Frequent traffic jams can be avoided if more people use bicycles to cover short distances in the city.

In Summary, Luxury Or Necessity?

Unlike the perception of many people, cycling infrastructure is not a luxury but a necessity. In short, it is wiser to use your car on a rainy day and use bicycles/ebikes as much as you can to avail all the benefits mentioned above. As a community, we can start demanding cycling infrastructure on local levels and start using bicycles more. Today, there are a plethora of options, from conventional bicycles to ebikes, that can meet your specific needs.

We at Quantum electric bike are also working towards a better, healthier, and cleaner world with our wide range of ebikes, customised as per the needs of the user.

Choose the path of sustainability.

Vélo aux États-Unis

French version here.

On April 19, the League of American Bicyclists releases its 2022 report (1) ranking the 50 U.S. states by their efforts toward bicycle transportation. This annual ranking has existed since 2008 for one or more important reasons. Find out why.

Bicycle injuries and fatalities cost the United States $23 billion a year

According to a report (2) by the US Department of Transportation, cyclists represent more than 2% of people who die in an accident involving a motor vehicle… while they represent only 1% of trips in the country. Only this statistic, which explicitly illustrates the bicycle problem in the United States, is enough to motivate the key transport actors to find solutions.

Digging deeper, these actors conclude and highlight the tremendous role that individual state leadership plays in making the nation’s roads safer for cyclists. Indeed, while states only own 19% of roads in the United States, 38% of bicyclist deaths occur on those roads. This issue, which has become publicized, thus gives rise to the ranking of the 50 American states on bicycle transport.

How to rank states on bicycle transportation?

Evaluating and comparing territories on their involvement in the bicycle problem in the United States is something that is quickly said but not immediately done. After careful consideration, the league identifies five factors that will be used to rank states against each other.

Criteria include a Complete Streets policy, a safe passing law, a statewide bike plan, a 2% or more of federal transportation funds spending on biking and walking, and a bicycle safety emphasis area.

So who are the best… and the worst?

Among the fifty positions, the state of Massachusetts finds itself in first place, followed by Oregon and Washington. These positions have been earned in part through their bike safety education campaigns as well as their bike plans. At the bottom of the ranking, we find Nebraska and Wyoming in 49th and last position, due to a lack of public funding and infrastructure in place.

Elsewhere on the scale, California ranks 4th, Florida 8th and New York 13th. Hawaii, meanwhile, ranks 27th on the ranking with an average score, while Alaska finds itself in 41st place due to a lack of legislation and incomplete policies.

What does the future of bicycle transportation in the United States hold?

It goes without saying that American states are now motivated to invest more and more in making bicycle transportation safer and more accessible. For context, only 13 states adequately met four or five ranking factors in 2015. Now that number has nearly doubled to 24 states in total.

On the other hand, technological advances and the development of transport encourage the use of bicycles and reduce the risk of accidents. Outside the United States, for example, the Quantum eBikes company located in Quebec contributes to the safety of Canadian cyclists by introducing them to the electric bike, which has been shown to be safer than the traditional bicycle.

60% des cyclistes se disent plus en sécurité sur un vélo électrique.

Cycling comes with its share of risks. Road accidents are a reality, which is why it is essential to take all the necessary safety measures when riding a bike. What many people don’t know is that e-bikes can contribute to safer cycling, although you might think otherwise. Here’s why.

Safety, a priority for cyclists

In a survey (1) carried out in North America, a group of researchers found that safety is among the main criteria for North Americans when it comes to buying a bike. As it should be! Even though electric bikes offer a pleasant ride, while being beneficial to the cyclists’ health and to the environment, the fact remains that they must be used with precaution. After all, electric bikes are subject to traffic laws as, they share the same space with other vehicles such as cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, etc.

The electric bike: safer than the standard bike

In North America, 60% of participants said they felt safer on an electric bike compared to a standard bike. Eight times more participants claimed to have avoided accidents thanks to the electric bike, compared to those who believed that the vehicle had contributed to it. According to a study (2) carried out by the same group of researchers, this can be explained by several reasons.

For example, by being able to cover longer distances, cyclists can take longer routes with their electric bike, to avoid unsafe regions. They can also accelerate faster to pass intersections and react more quickly in the event of an incident since their attention can be on the road, rather than on the bike itself.

Quantum: safety first

At Quantum, our customers’ safety is a priority. We take the time to share our expertise as best as we can, to advise you based on your needs and offer you the best e-biking experience possible. Our goal is that you leave with an electric bike that meets your needs, with all the knowledge you need to ride it safely.

28% des vélos électriques sont achetés pour remplacer une voiture à Londres

Rising traffic congestion contributes to worsening air pollution, delays bus and delivery services, and makes streets unpleasant for pedestrians and cyclists. More and more, big cities want to replace the car to improve the quality of life of their inhabitants thanks to electric bicycles. Discover the case of London.

Road congestion will cost London £9.3 billion a year

According to a 2013 study (1), 70% of the London workforce drove to work during rush hour. The average British driver would spend 124 hours a year in traffic jams. This figure should even increase to 136 hours in 2030. This is equivalent to 18 working days per year spent in traffic.

In the end, between the rising value of fuel, the time wasted in the car rather than being productive at work and the extra cost of transporting goods, traffic jams have a measurable economic impact on the London economy. £307 billion between 2013 and 2030 to be exact.

The electric bike: the solution to replace the car

Faced with the growing problem of traffic congestion in London, the city is turning to more sustainable transport solutions. This is considered essential both for the economy of the city and for the quality of life of its people. The plan is to make London the greatest cycling city in the world by improving its infrastructure and making cycling more accessible.

The good news is that according to a study (2), 81% of Londoners are already able to cycle. This figure could also increase with the diversification of vehicles, such as electric bicycles. Indeed, while 22% of Londoners say they are too old or not fit enough to ride a bike, electric bikes present themselves as an ideal solution to encourage reluctant city dwellers to replace the car. Additionally, the introduction of the bike-sharing scheme, Santander Cycle, is making e-bikes more accessible to Londoners.

Currently, two-thirds of short trips could be made by bicycle to replace the car, and this, in less than 20 minutes. By allowing London residents to make these journeys by bicycle, traffic congestion could be greatly reduced. 28% of electric bike owners (3) would have acquired their own to replace the car.

Quantum, leader in the democratization of electric bicycles in North America

At Quantum, we want to help North America make the same shift to more livable cities through e-bikes. In addition to the benefits to the local economy, e-bikes contribute to a cleaner environment and healthier residents. Are you going to participate in the change?

Do you hear more and more about electric bikes around you? If so, it’s no coincidence. Indeed, the market for electric bicycles is growing (1) not only in Quebec, but also internationally. And for good reasons: electric bikes have many advantages over traditional bikes, such as saving time. Whether it’s commuting to work or running errands, find out how investing in an electric bike can save you valuable time.

A study conducted in 2017 (2) showed that the median speed of electric bicycles was 23.1 km/h and 18.4 km/h for a traditional bicycle. Thus, trips by electric bike were on average 21% faster than by traditional bike. This amounts to 21% of time saved in transport during the year.

Take for instance that it takes you 30 minutes to drive to work and 45 minutes to return, with traffic. In total, it adds up to 1h15 of transport per day. It is also about 25 hours per month, and 300 hours per year! By investing in an electric bike, this figure drops to 237 hours per year. It’s 63 hours saved, almost two weeks of work freed up in your agenda. What would you do with all this new free time?

Not to mention that in addition to saving money, switching from a car to an electric bike also allows you to increase your level of physical activity. This helps achieve the recommended 150 minutes of moderate physical activity weekly.

Buying a Gazelle electric bicycle

is one of the best decisions I have ever made! Yes, nothing less!

First, let’s get to know each other. I am active, energetic, and in great shape. I like to move, and exercise but ultimate performances and medals are not for me! Let’s say that I would prefer to spend my sporting activities in pleasure rather than in pain!

I love the outdoors; it calms and recharges my batteries! I love to feel the breeze, the sun, the smell of markets or fields … happiness! I also like the urban animation, the proximity, and the city buzz.

I have a sporty husband who, like me, likes outdoor activities, but without question his level of endurance is superior to mine! So, as you can imagine our bike rides were done in this sequence: bike – then a long wait by my darling husband during my extreme effort to join him. Bike some more – another long wait … and so on.

Although he gladly adapted his pace to mine and paused with joy, over time, I came to lose interest and suggested he ride without me.

A few years later, in the summer of 2019, my bike was hanging in the garage collecting dust. Walking and hiking had become my only summer activities, and more often than not without leaving the neighborhood.

The good times spent cycling with my sweetheart paraded like a film: the discoveries of a new neighborhood, or bike path … the landscapes, the stops for an ice cream or a café latté, the bike picnics with our bikes leaning against a tree and the feeling of well-being on the return.

So, was cycling a thing of the past for me? Or limited to riding alone, without my husband? Or again, riding as we had done previously with me not being able to keep up. What if there was another solution?

It was at this moment that I began to consider an electric bicycle but not without certain prejudices: I am in good shape, I am young … I wasn’t sure I had the profile of an ebike owner.

I decided to dig deeper into this idea and went to the QUANTUM eBikes store, the specialists in electric bikes. Their mission found meaning for me: Demystifying electric bikes and making them accessible to everyone.

I was greeted with a smile. They were interested in my needs. I was told the basics of electric bikes. Among other things, I learned that it is possible to ride a pedelec without motor assistance, by simply using the gears – if that’s what you want. And then when you want a little boost, for the climb just ahead or to go faster or further, you then choose a level of assistance. I took the time to learn about eBikes, and without pressure, was presented with high quality major brands, and all very beautiful eBikes.

During this time, I observed the comings and goings of customers in the shop:

  • a client in his thirties using his EAV as a means of transportation from the South Shore to Montreal
  • a young mother who came to get her brand new EAV with a child seat
  • the couple interested in 2 folding eBikes for the chalet
  • a long-term client, who stopped in to say hello to the owners, telling me in passing to have lost 50 pounds since the purchase of his EAV
  • a young couple of European tourists wishing to rent Gazelle electric bike to explore Montreal

All these smiling and happy people. There was a lot of activity and energy in this shop!

And then, I was kindly offered to give it a try on the nearby bike path. Why not? Seeing these customers, my prejudices were starting to melt like snow in the sun!

It was a true revelation! I was won over! If an electric bike allowed me to go outside, improve my physical health and well-being while having fun, then it’s definitely for me !! and maybe for you as well?

My first 45 days

So, I bought my Gazelle CityZen the same day! Why this one in particular?

Firstly, I was attracted by its sporty look, the integrated battery and its ivory color. Then, by the technical characteristics:

  • Lightweight aluminum frame
  • Bosch Performance Line central motor up to 32 km/h
  • Excellent autonomy thanks to the 500Wh battery
  • Powerful Shimano hydraulic disc brakes

The following Saturday, my husband and I did our first bike ride, coordinated in unison!

Throughout the summer, our bike rides multiplied, having fun and at times passing him and waiting for him to catch up! A nod to a bygone era!

As my schedule allows it, I sometimes ride my Gazelle on my own, free as a bird and with complete trust and confidence!

For our next summer vacation, we plan to bring our bikes to explore new horizons. We purchased a THULE bike rack from QUANTUM.

I have the wind in my sails, but I will stop here, and save the rest for another time.

I think you will agree that an electric assisted bicycle changes your life, and can solidify a mariage!

Let’s face it, global warming is a reality whether you believe it to be man-made or not and there are many ways that each and every one of us can help do our part to slow down the effects of our planet heating up and electric bikes may be part of the solution. According to Berkeley Earth, our planet was on average 1.0 degree warmer than the 1850-1900 average temperature, making it “unambiguously” the warmest year on record. That’s a scary fact to consider. The warming of our planet means that sea levels are rising which wreaks havoc on coastal wildlife and fragile marine environment like the Great Barrier Reef. The effects are not only limited to marine life though, mammals and insects all feel the changes that are upon us and must adapt – or face extinction. It is up to us humans to reconsider our choices and way of life in order to make more conscientious decisions regarding our food, lifestyle and transportation.

Congestion, what congestion?

One of the easiest changes a person can make is regarding their transportation choices. With more and more of the population living in cities, growing congestion concerns in major metropolitan areas and our lack of spare time in our busy lives, the argument for electric bikes as an alternative mode of transportation is making a lot of sense. For example, the average distance a person travels to work when living in an urban environment is less than 6.5km (one-way). This distance can easily be covered by bicycle in much less time than it would take in a car, even on a day with little traffic. If we consider the congestion issues that are present in more and more urban cities (think Los Angeles, New York, Toronto and even Montreal!) it starts to become obvious which mode of transportation makes more sense from a time-saving perspective. Now, once you’ve reached your destination, you have to circle around to try to find a parking spot, then park and pay. I speak from personal experience when I say that I have sometimes circled around my destination for over half an hour in order to find a parking spot. Let’s now compare that to an e Bike which took half (or possibly less) time to get to your destination and maybe 90 seconds to find a bike rack, lock your bike and remove your helmet. The time savings are obvious and hard to ignore. As we all know, time is money and having more time to enjoy ourselves or get other tasks done is a no-brainier.

Live longer and happier!

Electric bikes are not only more time-efficient than a car for urban travel, they are also an excellent way to combat our increasingly sedentary lifestyle. A hundred years ago, our population was much more active in their day to day chores and their overall lifestyle and we had no need to supplement our day with physical activity. With the increasing ease at which we can order food to our front door, stream movies at home and video chat instead of meeting in person all contribute to an increasingly sedentary population with real, measurable effects on our health. Why not kill two birds with one stone and change your way of getting around? With an electric bike, you are able to be more efficient in your travel and you can stay in great shape! It’s proven that cycling will help your overall health including increasing your cardio vascular threshold, excess fat loss and, most importantly, your happiness. Studies show a strong correlation between happiness and living a longer life; thankfully electric bikes offer you just that.

An eBike for everyone

Now that we covered the financial and health benefits of switching to an electric bike, let’s cover one last point; the versatility of eBikes on the market today. Just like with vehicles, electric bikes come in all shapes and sizes depending on what you like, what you want to do with it and your personal preferences when it comes to brands, colors, options etc. For example, the delivery driver who makes dozens of stops every day with small parcels and boxes will usually drive some type of van. In many cities such as Montreal, New York, London and Amsterdam, these drivers have given up their trucks in exchange for electric cargo bikes. These eBikes come in multiple sizes and styles that will allow you to custom build them to your needs and specifications. Delivery companies have reported up to 3.5x more efficiency in their deliveries and a dramatic decrease in parking violations that cost these companies a fortune every year, not to mention lower maintenance costs when compared to a van.

electric bike

For the office worker who needs something easy and versatile for their morning and evening commute to work, why not try a folding electric bike? These compact eBikes offer all the power of a full-sized eBike in a small, folding design that can be stored in the corner of your office or even under your desk! Gone are the days of rushing to find parking in the morning in order to be at your 9:00am meeting on time, you can now arrive at work, fold up your eBike and go right to your desk. Another benefit of this type of transportation is that the eBike assists you in your pedaling so you don’t arrive at your meeting with sweat stains and stinky feet which, let’s be honest, nobody wants!

Then, of course, there are the more “traditional” electric bikes which give you all the benefits of cycling, with the added feature of being able to zip through the city streets with minimal effort (when needed). Gone are the days of the one-size-fits-all eBikes. Today, there are dozens of great companies making a plethora of design styles. The hardest part today is choosing between all the amazing options on the market!

Environmental awareness: a win-win

At the end of the day, we all have to do our part for the environment. Why not make some small changes in your lifestyle that will also positively benefit our planet? Swapping your car for an eBike may seem like a huge change but you can start small and work your way up to where you feel comfortable. Even by taking your eBike to work just once or twice a week, you are greatly reducing your greenhouse gas emissions and benefiting from a healthier, more active lifestyle. It’s time to take action and rethink your transportation choices you’ll never look back!

Motor type, rider weight, wind speed…what else about your e bicycle range ?

One of the most common questions that we hear about electric bikes is about the average battery autonomy. In other words, how far you are able to travel with your eBike. This question is quite often difficult to answer, even for the electric bike specialists. There are so many variables that contribute to (or diminish) the battery range on an eBike. Let us try to explain a few main points that affect your battery autonomy on an eBike!

In this article, we would like to primarily focus on the electric assist bicycle equipped with a Bosch mid-drive motor. Bosch is the world leading manufacturer of eBike systems, occupying over 60% of the e bike market. It has won many consecutive awards for its system, for example the Red Dot Award on the Active Line and Active Line Plus models in 2017 and 2018.

Factors affecting the ebike autonomy

The right gear

One of the most common mistakes the new eBike owners make is fully relying on the electric assistance and forgetting about switching gears. The “correct” gear significantly saves the battery power. It is important to remember that your electric bike still works like a traditional one, and the assistance is there to help you pedal easier. And that you still have to switch gears while riding on different terrains. High gears are needed for when you’re going at high speeds on the flat or downhill – you are supposed to feel the pressure when you push on a pedal (torque). That’s what makes your bike go.  If you are approaching a hill and turning up your assistance level, remaining in a higher gear, you will exhaust your battery faster. Switching to the lower gear allows to easier climb hills. So it is highly recommended to remain conscious of the elevations and your speed, and switch gears to fine-tune the ride!

Weight of the rider and extra cargo

Another important factor would be rider’s weight and any extra cargo on the bike. The more significant the rider’s weight is, the more energy the engine would demand from the battery supply, therefore reducing the possible travel distance. The same goes for any cargo we strap onto our eBikes, basically every pound counts!

Elevation

Another factor would be the difference in elevation. A mountainous terrain, although offering beautiful sightseeing experiences, will reduce the overall distance you can travel. The elevation fluctuation requires more battery energy to support the motor when it is assisting you going up hills. On flat, even terrain the energy expense is significantly less because of the momentum created by the speed of the bike.

Stops and starts

Just like when riding a car, frequent stops and starts use a lot of energy power. It is, unfortunately, inevitable when you are commuting in a busy city with the constantly changing traffic lights. So when you are about to take of, switch to the lower gear and help your bike to start, instead of turning the highest assistance level. That might slow down your start but it would significantly impact the battery life.

Tire pressure

Keeping your tires pumped up is one of the most important bike life hacks that people sometime tend to forget about (another one being regularly oiling your chain). Low tires significantly drains your battery because now the motor has to work harder to maintain the speed. To avoid the sluggish ride and prolong the life of your tires, keep your ties at the proper pressure!

The Rider’s Posture and the Wind

The airdynamics is a key factor when we talk about speed. If your bike has a comfort style frame and you ride with a more upright position, you will have a harder time accelerating and maintaining high speed. And if you are relying on the assistance to help you gain the speed, it will drain the battery faster. Similarly, a headwind will affect the eBike range as you’re pushing against wind to maintain your speed.

Temperature

Batteries that experience the extreme cold of winters (like in Quebec for example) will not have the same range as a battery being used at, say, 15 degrees Celsius. Batteries do not like extreme temperatures, whether hot or cold and you will find that the greatest range will be achieved in mild temperatures. There are, however, ways to get around this. Many aftermarket companies have created protective, insulated cases for your batteries in order to keep them at a more constant temperature. This is ideal for anyone wanting to ride their electric bike in the winter!

The surface conditions

A smooth surface such as asphalt will allow more distance than on gravel or off-road paths.

eBike Motor

More powerful motors require more energy power. They accelerate faster. Bosch-equipped Ebikes offer four different levels of assistance; Eco, Tour, Sport and Turbo. With Turbo mode offering a 250% boost, you can imagine that you will get quite a bit less range in this assistance mode compared to Eco mode, which only outputs 50% assistance.

Why ride an eBike?

In Europe, electrical assist bicycles have been gaining steady popularity over the past decade. However, North America is still catching up with the trend. Electric bike is designed to improve the entire experience of cycling, helping you to go up steep hills and getting to places without perspiring or getting tired.

So how does it work?

When you start riding your eBike, the motor, based on your velocity, weight and other factors, kicks in and assist you in pedaling. It allows you to accelerate smoothly and go further distances. There are usually several levels of assistance that you can choose from, depending on how fast and easy of a ride you would like to have. Electrical assist bikes usually come in different styles and shapes, so everyone can pick something suitable to their needs. Whether it is for commuting to work every day or taking longer rides on rougher terrains.

There are a lot of benefits that an eBike can bring you – they can make your day to day commute a lot easier and ultimately improve the quality of your life! Here are our 7 main reasons why:

1.Get (and stay) in shape

Our first reason for getting an eBike is an obvious one. Cycling, whether by traditional or electric bicycle, is a great way to get in shape and tone your muscles. You’re not just working your legs on, you’re also strengthening your core, shoulders, and glutes, just to name a few. All while being low impact and easy on your joints!

In addition, eBikes are an ideal way to work on your cardio because you can select different levels of assistance, allowing you to build it up at your own pace. Feeling short of breath? Crank up the assistance until you stabilize your breathing. Breezing along without any effort? Turn the level assistance back down and get working!

2. Ride longer, and faster

Gone are the days where 75km rides seemed impossible. With an eBike by your side, this is no longer the daunting task that it once was. One fully charged battery on the electric bike will allow you to go as far as 110-130 kilometers. And, if you add an extra battery on your eBike, the distance doubles! Yes, we are talking about 200 kilometers bike rides! With electric bicycles, you can redefine your limits.

Besides, why not do it at a good speed too? Riding around at 10km/h is fun for a while but who doesn’t like to feel the wind in their hair? With an electrical assisted bicycle you easily gain speed up to 32km/h with the motor’s help. Certainly, there’s nothing like speeding past traditional cyclists without any effort.

3. Use on multiple occasions

There is a great variety of electric bikes  – cargo, tandem, folding, mountain, commuter, among many others. Stopping to buy groceries on your way back from work, or picking up kids from school, might become a way easier task with an eBike – cargo bikes allow you to carry larger loads with no effort involved! Other bikes, like commuter electric bikes, will not only reduce your travel times between home and work, but also allow you to take long distant camping trips and several day tours.

Another amazing option that exists within electric bike industry is a folding eBike – ideal for city living where storage is limited, or when you want to take your eBike with you on a trip –  it fits easily into the trunk of a car.

4. Avoid traffic

Tired of wasting your time in a traffic jam on your way to work? Today, most urban cities have incorporated bike lanes into their existing and future roadways. On an electric bike, you get access to these cycle routes that cars and motorcycles cannot reach. Moreover, an electrical assist bike also gives you an advantage of higher average speed than a regular bike, which means that you will be arriving to work faster and without breaking a sweat! You get to avoid all traffic jams and eliminate hills and headwinds, which makes eBikes the most reliable and fastest mode of transportation!

5. Save Money

Cars can be expensive – when you factor in gas, insurance, maintenance and the cost of the car itself, the figures may appear quite high. On the other hand, an eBike is relatively cost-free once you buy the bike itself. Yes, it does also need maintenance from time to time, but the difference in its price is substantial. Besides, electric bikes do not require a license or insurance, as well as parking and the cost associated with it! So think of the savings you can make by switching over to an eBike for most, if not all of your transportation.

6. Help the Environment

How much of carbon dioxide is emitted by your car on the daily commute to work? In contrast, eBikes are carbon-free, use very little electricity to charge the battery and only need some good old fashion elbow grease to get you from point A to point B. Besides, there’s nothing quite like a deep breath of fresh air on a warm summer morning. You’ll be experiencing a lot more of this once you stop using your car (or bus) in order to get around on your electric bike!

Conclusion

To conclude, riding an eBike is simply fun! You will catch yourself smiling all the time while you ride your electric bike. Being outdoors, relieving stress, saving money and being more efficient in your travels are all great reasons to smile!

Woman and man riding Stromer e-bikes in town

As the pleasant weather and sunshine draw near, your mind wanders to the fond memories of cycling you had last year – riding along the scenic bike path by the water, the exhilarating commute to work (a definite highlight of the day!), the weekend getaways in the countryside, and even the quick jaunts to the market. However, you also recall the frustrating experience of being overtaken by other cyclists on the same path or commute, who seemed to be effortlessly speeding past you. Upon reflection, you remember that those were electric bicycles, commonly known as “eBikes.”

Have you ever thought about why more people are switching to e-bikes? Well, worry not. We will answer all your questions.

Before explaining the advantages of ebikes, let us give you a brief introduction to e-bikes.

What are e-bikes?

Electric bikes, or eBikes, are like regular bikes, but with a superpowered secret device: a small electric motor that provides you a boost while pedaling. It’s like having your own personal sidekick that helps you conquer any terrain with ease.

So, how does it work? Well, eBikes use a battery-powered motor that kicks in when you start pedaling, providing you with extra power and speed. It’s like having a magical force that propels you forward, making cycling more fun and effortless than ever before. E-bikes are available in the market in all shapes and sizes, from sleek and speedy models to more laid-back cruisers. With just one electric motor and battery, you can get up to 120 kilometers of extra assistance while you ride. That’s like having a superhero sidekick that helps you go longer and faster than ever before and reach places that may have been out of reach for the average cyclist.

But wait, there’s more! Some electric bikes even come with two batteries, which means you can get up to 250 kilometers of range on a single charge. That’s enough to tackle epic rides or go on amazing adventures without worrying about running out of juice or getting tired. It’s like having a supercharged bike that can take you anywhere you want to go.

Man next to a Riese & Muller e-bike in a foggy landscape

Most eBikes come with 3 to 5 levels of assistance that enhance your pedaling power. This means that you can put in most of the effort and the motor will give you a little boost, or if you’re feeling lazy, you can let the motor do most of the work while you pedal at your own pace and enjoy the ride. Thanks to the levels of assistance, you can even reach speeds of up to 32 kilometers (20 miles) an hour – that’s super-fast!

But here’s the kicker – eBikes are not motorcycles or scooters, and you still have to pedal to get the motor to work. That’s where the fun and convenience of an eBike come in. You get to enjoy the speed and power while still experiencing the freedom and quietness of a regular bike. Plus, in most cities and municipalities, you can ride your eBike on bike paths without needing a license, which makes commuting and exploring the city even more convenient. Most ebikes are allowed on bike paths, trails, and parks. However, the rules can change, thus why we suggest checking your local laws before buying an ebike.

Why are electric bikes better than traditional bikes?

There are several reasons why electric bikes, or eBikes, are considered better than traditional bikes.

Following are the advantages of electric cycles over traditional bikes:

Assistance with pedaling

Unlike traditional bikes that require all the work to come from your legs, eBikes give you an extra boost with a small electric motor that helps you pedal. This means you can ride longer, tackle steeper hills, and arrive at your destination without feeling completely wiped out.

Increased speed

While traditional bikes are great for leisurely rides, they can’t match the speed of eBikes. With speeds of up to 20 mph (32 km/h), you can cruise past traffic and get to your destination in a jiffy. It’s like having a magical transportation carpet that takes you wherever you want to go at warp speed!

More accessible

Traditional bikes require a certain level of physical fitness and mobility, which can be a barrier for some people. With eBikes, the electric motor helps level the playing field and makes cycling more accessible to everyone. This means people with knee or joint issues, older adults, and those with disabilities can all enjoy the fun and freedom of cycling.

Environmentally friendly

Unlike traditional bikes, eBikes are equipped with electric motors that help reduce the amount of effort required to pedal. This means you can travel further and more efficiently without relying on fossil fuels, which makes eBikes a more environmentally friendly option. Usually, traditional bike owners have the take their cars out from time to time for even short distances to save time or to carry their bicycles to the cycling trails. The utility of ebike is such that you will automatically use it more and avoid using cars.

Cost-effective

While traditional bikes may seem like a more affordable option at first, they can’t be used for daily medium or even short distances, especially if you are going to a meeting or something important. After all, no one wants to look tired and sweat all the time. This compels traditional bikes owner to invest in a second motorized vehicle, either a car or a motorcycle. Which ultimately increases the cost of traveling. On the other hand, an ebike is a single solution giving you the advantages of normal bikes and other motorized vehicles. It requires minimal maintenance and no gas expenses, making them a cost-effective alternative in the long run.

What are the advantages of electric bikes?

Overall, eBikes are a fun and friendly alternative to traditional bikes. With assistance for pedaling, increased speed, accessibility, eco-friendliness, and cost-effectiveness, eBikes provide a unique cycling experience that traditional bikes just can’t match.

What are the benefits of buying an electric bike?

Electric bikes offer a range of benefits for anyone looking for a fun and easy way to commute, exercise, or explore the great outdoors. With the assistance of an electric motor, eBikes make it easier to climb hills and ride longer distances, without putting too much strain on your legs. They are also eco-friendly, emitting less carbon emissions than traditional cars, and can save you money on gas and maintenance costs in the long run.

Additionally, eBikes offer a convenient and fast way to commute through cities and urban areas and can be used on bike paths and trails without needing a license in most areas. Overall, investing in an eBike can offer a fun, efficient, and environment-friendly way to get around and explore the world.

So, get yourself an ebike today and experience the world like you have never before!

CR18 folding bike. It will change your life

Having suffered a herniated disc in both my back and neck at the ripe young age of 25, I had to take an extended break from cycling. This was devastating to me. Little did I know that hope would come through in the form of a folding electric assist bike CR18. As my search for summer employment came to a head when I first met Robert for an interview, I admittedly was skeptical as I had always considered myself a road cycling purist.

Electric assist bike?

What exactly was the point of an ‘electric assist bicycle’. I even thought the name, eBike, was a little off. Robert showed me around the shop, and it was until I witnessed the sale of a Quantum CR18 to a wonderful couple that I began to understood. Patrice and Genevieve had come into the shop with a particular query in mind. Patrice had a badly injured hip and thought he was on the mend, he was weary of re-injuring his hip. Robert and I showed him our folding Quantum CR18 to explain  why this would the perfect eBike to get him back on the road (and for that matter, myself too). Patrice was looking for a way to continue the sport he loved. With the Quantum CR18 in tow, Patrice was now able to commute to work with ease.

The Electric bike offers the ability for people with serious injuries, limited mobility and other restrictions to ride again. Even if you are in fine health with no injuries, the Quantum CR18 will suit your needs. Having worked here at Quantum eBikes for over 6 months now, I have compiled 7 advantages I believe the folding electric bike CR18 has over traditional bicycles.

1. The Quantum CR18 offers unmatched practicality

Amongst the many reasons I was distraught at the reality of not being able to cycle was the simple fact that I now had to forsake my cherished commuting method. Gone were the days that I was cycling freely along the Lachine Canal to work, enjoying an essential morning workout. Now my reality was filled with a burgeoning traffic crisis and a shoddy public transportation system. The Quantum CR18 changed that for me. This electric assisted bike is so light that it made transportation easy for me again. I needed some assistance to take the pressure off of my back and neck, the folding bike CR18 filled my commuting void with ease. This electric bike weighs only 19kg, meaning I did not have to lock my bike outside and could safely bring it with me. Its foldability makes this very easy to accomplish.

2. Perfect for urban or rural transport

Next came the test of bringing my CR18 down to my country roads to see if it would pass the test. I was instantly delighted at the fact that I no longer needed to deal with the hassle of installing a bike rack, mounting my bike, etc. Occupying a space of 0.35m3, this foldable electric bike fit neatly into the trunk of my car. With a battery that lasted well over 40km, I was able to enjoy the beautiful countryside again.

3. Extremely easy to use

Gone are the days of messing around with an overly complex user interface. The folding bike CR18 combines practicality with elegance. With a simple LCD screen on the handle bar, it is easy to choose how much assistance you want to employ on your bike ride. Also, there is a neat throttle feature throw in to boot. By simply holding the minus button down, the CR18 accelerates on its own. Again, being able to control your level of assistance is crucial here. The Quantum CR18’s 9 speeds allows for a seamless use of this feature.

4. Offers unmatched security advantages

This folding electric bike will quell your security fears. Having personally had two vintage road bikes stolen from me, I have grown weary of locking my bicycle outside. With a traditional bike frame, transporting a bicycle inside and out of an apartment or an office building can be cumbersome. There are more models and options than ever before, giving consumers the ability to select what works for them. Increased power, battery-life, and reliability make this environmentally-friendly mode of transport worth investigating.

It’s not cheating

A lot of people have a misconception about electric bikes – that it works like a scooter, so what’s the point? In fact, they are called electric assist bikes for a reason – they are here to assist you while you are pedaling. The motor is only activated while the pedals are in motion. They are meant to help you ride your bike with greater ease, go further distances, climb hills and do other things that sometimes can be challenging on a regular bike.

More exercise than you think

Pedal a little or a lot; either way, you’re outside in the fresh air and you’re moving. Electric bike can actually help you become more active, more often, and for longer periods. Having an electrically assisted bicycle does not necessarily make you a passive rider – it can enable even the most serious cyclist to go further, faster, and become stronger. A little assistance can help you go a long way. Let the motor kick in to help you get up a steep hill and carry on at the pace you choose. Keep up with other cyclists and avoid over-exertion that makes you exhausted or leaves you with sore muscles. Electric capacity can help develop muscular endurance – you don’t have to stop to give yourself a break. Build your stamina gradually while knowing that a bit of extra ‘oomph’ is in the motor if you need it. It’s not about sitting back while a motor does all the work for you, although that is an option if you choose. Pedal as long as you like with no resistance from the motor, and easily activate the electric mode to help you increase speed, power up inclines, or carry extra cargo.

“The Swiss Driving Experience With Stromer e bikes”

The Stromer electric bike offer an ultimate alternative to cars for urban transportation – fast, elegant and powerful an incomparable autonomy, power and versatility; not only are they good for the environment, they are not harmful to the environment, whilst being chic and stylish. Discover the new references for urban mobility with the Stromer, the best electric bicycles and permit me to talk to you about the engine, as well as its motorization.

On the Stromer ST1 engine, the torque acts directly on the rear wheel and turns into a propulsion. Conversely, with central engines, the torque is engaged before the derailleur gears, and is transmitted by the derailleur gear. It is therefore difficult to compare a central engine with an engine that’s integrated in the hub of the rear wheel. In the engine’s specifications, Stromer St1 review always indicates the nominal torque. The nominal torque is the torque that can be called over a period of time. The maximum torque is significantly higher

TDCM: Electric engine for bikes, Stromer the best and the most connected electric bike.

The ST1 Stromer bike uses a direct drive hub engine (like Bionx), which is manufactured by the Taiwanese company TDCM. Since 1995, TDCM focuses on the development and production of electric drive systems for electric bicycles, as well as for other applications, such as medical devices.

Their durability is well-known in the market. The TDCM configuration on the Stromer ST1 is an exclusive design for Stromer. The heart of the system is a direct drive, brushless motor with a nominal power of 500 watts and a minimum and maximum torque of 30 Nm and 40 Nm, respectively. Although it is heavier than others engines such as Bionx, the TDCM engine is an engine that has a lower sensitivity to heat accumulation during uphill climbing or downhill regeneration. By accumulating less heat, the electric motor enables you to have maximum propulsion on steep slopes. When climbing, it is preferable that your electric bicycle continually propels you to the top, without breaking.

Stromer uses a TMM4 torque sensor that is built into the rear output, unlike the Bionx engine which has a built-in controller on the engine. The advantage of the external controller is that, it is easy to maintain and it has a very high heat tolerance. The Stromer’s 500 watt electric motor is very reliable, maybe a little bit heavier, but has many advantages to cover-up for this inconvenience. This type of sensor for electric bike has for a very long time been used by the Dutch. It is reliable and well concealed on the bikes.

Let’s go straight to the point, is playing golf, in a golf cart actually a sport? … professionals walk.

Is fishing, with a motor boat a sport? … Hockey players no longer use wooden sticks …

technology is evolving, needs are changing, products are increasingly being connected.

Cycling is a sport that offers a lot to the human body. The electric bicycle offers much more … It is

there to provide the assistance. The electric bicycle enables people who’ve stopped riding, for

whatsoever reasons, to get back on the saddle.

Regulation leads us to a false perception, when we compare the regulations to Europe, in terms

of assistance.

They have 2 types of e Bicycles either for a maximum speed of 32 km/hour or 45 km/hour. They

have a start button from 1 to 6 km/hours. Thereafter, you have to pedal in order to activate the

engine.

The e bike here in Canada have considerably similar regulations, as those in the USA. Our

acceleration button enables us not to pedal to the 32 km/hour speed.

On cycling paths, we often see cyclists on electric bicycles, who ride up to a speed of 32 km,

without pedaling. And that was where some of the negative perception of electric bikes originated.

Perhaps it is the laws of the market, as well as our American-oriented legislation that leads us

towards a more negative perception.

In Germany a cyclist riding an e Bicycle is healthy, but that’s not the case here with us …

With the new models coming to us from Europe, we have to change that perception.

Long live the bike, long live the ebike
